Introduction to UV Curing
UV curing generally refers to coatings (paints), inks, adhesives (adhesives) that require UV curing.
UV coatings (inks) generally consist of resins (oligomers), monomers (active diluents), photoinitiators, as well as some fillers and additives. The prerequisite for photoinitiators to function is that they must receive light and produce free radicals or cations, thereby initiating polymerization reactions.
Currently, different photoinitiators are used in combination in coatings.
UV usually refers to electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths ranging from 100 nanometers to 400 nanometers. We often mention UVA, UVB, and UVC, with wavelengths of 315-400 nanometers, 280-315 nanometers, and 100-280 nanometers, respectively. For mercury lamps, their wavebands cover UVA, UVB, and UVC (mainly in the range of 200-280 nanometers), and their effects are more concentrated in UVB and UVC.
LED UV and photoinitiator
Currently, UV LEDs used for curing are concentrated in the UVA band.
For certain UV coatings, simple LED UV curing can cause surface adhesion, which is due to the oxygen in the air hindering the reaction of free radicals, affecting the surface dryness and causing adhesion; During UV curing of mercury lamps, due to the presence of low band ultraviolet light, oxygen will react with ozone, isolating the contact between UV coating and oxygen.
We will analyze the photoinitiator and LED UV lamp for curing compatibility. At present, most of the coatings are mixed photoinitiators.
